MCTs such as the ones found in coconut oil don’t do any of these bad things. Your thyroid is free to function as it was made to do.

Increased Metabolism

Without a doubt, coconut oil increases your metabolism, at least temporarily. The reason, again, is the way that your body rapidly breaks down and uses MCTs. Everything that your body does requires calories, or energy. Digesting the food that you eat typically takes about 10 percent of the calories that you ingest just to break them down and convert them to energy.

MCTs are pretty much shuttled straight to your liver because they’re broken down very easily, so they don’t consume the energy that the harder-to-digest LCTs do. Your body now has extra energy that it can use for, well, energy. It’s estimated that MCTs take about one-third fewer calories to digest than other fats, thus increasing your metabolism.

In a recent research study of people who followed similar diets, the group that used coconut oil lost an average of seven pounds in a three-month period, while those who used other oils lost an average of only three pounds. The researchers suggested that the metabolic boost was perhaps caused by easy digestion of the coconut oil.

Another study evaluated the effect of MCTs on metabolism by measuring participants’ metabolisms before and after consuming coconut oil. The average increase in metabolism for the group was 48 percent, but in obese participants, metabolism increased as much as 65 percent, and the fat-burning effect lasted as long as twenty-four hours.
